What the team does

Our Commercial Litigation team is the largest single team in the firm, with over 170 lawyers. We enjoy a varied diet of domestic and international work across our main offices in Birmingham and London, and in Dubai. We have specialists in arbitration, banking and finance litigation, contentious trusts, corporate investigations, directors' disqualifications, economic crime, health and safety, housing, IT litigation, insurance and reinsurance and professional liability, as well as a number of more general commercial litigators.

We have expertise in a range of sectors including aerospace, automotive, food and drink, financial services, real estate, retail and technology. Our client base is also diverse and includes the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills, FTSE 100, 250 and AIM-listed clients including Dyson, Phillips Electronics, 3i Group, GKN, NCP and Premier Foods.

A substantial proportion of our work is of a global nature. Our team operates in the English High Court, in English domestic arbitration and in international arbitration for a range of foreign clients. We have acted on litigation and/or arbitration work in countries all over the world including Russia, Australia, the Cayman Islands, Singapore and the US.

What it's like to work with us

Our team has a great variety of work which offers its lawyers the opportunity to develop their experience, whilst managing a full caseload. Junior lawyers will obtain hands-on experience, including of direct client contact, across a wide variety of matters, ranging from high-value multijurisdictional 'big ticket' disputes to smaller cases that they will be encouraged to run themselves. We also have numerous secondment opportunities, which is an excellent learning opportunity to really understand what clients want from their lawyers.

We are an open and supportive team which encourages both collective and individual lawyer development. There is an established training programme within the team, which all members of the team are encouraged to input into, by planning and delivering sessions as well as attending them. This provides further scope for juniors to develop their presentation skills in a supportive environment. Personal development is also the driver behind the existing six and 12-monthly review programme, which encourages professional growth and provides a forum by which team members can openly plan their own futures with the assistance of the team's partners.

We love a good social event too, breakfasts, away days, party nights, trainee seat move drinks, we've done all sorts!
